Studying an Equine Degree at University Centre Sparsholt
I have always had a passion for horses and knew I needed to find a way to pursue it. When I visited Sparsholt, I instantly felt welcome and at home, and the class sizes really suited my learning style.
I completed my undergraduate degree in Equine Science and Welfare, and now alongside my Master’s degree I work as an equine nutritionist, visiting yards, weighing horses and offering feeding and management advice.
The BSc (Hons) Equine Science and Welfare is an interactive course that gives the best of both worlds and allows for the practical application of what you learn in the classroom. The lecturers are extremely knowledgeable and bring plenty of industry experience to the lectures, and I built strong connections with them.
We also had the opportunity to go on trips to places like Blenheim, Badminton and London International Horse Trials. My favourite was our trip to Newmarket, where we were able to visit some amazing places and hear from experts in the industry.
The facilities at UCS are brilliant – the new Research and Science Centre is perfect for lectures and studying and the Equine Centre has lovely horses to ride. Our lecturers are fabulous, they are always there to help and bring a wealth of knowledge to the university. I lived on site throughout my degree, which was the best experience.
I hope that once I complete my MSc I can grow my work within nutrition as I am really keen to make a difference within the industry and support changes to improve welfare. I think the knowledge and industry connections I’ve made will massively support me in my chosen career.
