Studying Agriculture at University Centre Sparsholt
As a previous student I was already familiar with Sparsholt’s campus, and I knew the class sizes would allow for more personalised learning. The open days reinforced my decision, as the staff, lecturers and senior team were welcoming, supportive and clearly committed to providing a high-quality learning experience. These factors made UCS the ideal place to continue my education studying Agriculture.
Studying agriculture at UCS offers an up-to-date and relevant curriculum that provides valuable insight into the wide range of career paths available within the sector.
A key strength is the teaching team – professionals in their respective fields, bringing real-world expertise and first-hand industry knowledge into the classroom. Their ongoing engagement with the agricultural sector means the content remains current and grounded in practice. Highlights include trips to major industry shows such as LAMMA, CropTec and the Rural Business Centre, which provide valuable insight into current industry practice, new technology and the wider agricultural sector.
In my opinion, studying agriculture here has directly strengthened my confidence and capabilities in my paid role on the dairy farm, particularly in using the up-to-date dairy unit featuring both robotic and conventional milking parlours. Sparsholt also demonstrates strong expertise in pig husbandry and fieldwork, offering high‑quality practical sessions that meet industry standards. In addition, the laboratories
are exceptionally well equipped, with specialist machinery such as milk sampling equipment, which helps develop accurate and professional
laboratory skills.
UCS has a personal and supportive learning environment which allows you to work closely alongside lecturers. The result is a learning experience that feels more engaging, more interactive, and better adapted to each student’s needs something that larger universities may
struggle to provide.
Looking ahead, I see myself pursuing several potential career pathways within the sector. I am particularly interested in working in genetics, where I can contribute to advancements in livestock breeding and herd improvement. I also have a strong interest in teaching, helping to develop the next generation of agricultural professionals.
Being a Sparsholt graduate will help me achieve my ambitions thanks to the quality of teaching and the strong relationships I have built with the lecturers. The lessons are well‑structured and engaging, delivered by staff who create a positive learning environment where you can have meaningful discussions and enjoy the learning process. This balance of professionalism and approachability has helped me grow in confidence, develop practical and academic skills, and gain a clearer understanding of the career paths available to me. These experiences will be valuable as I move forward into the agricultural industry and work towards my long-term goals.
