Purchasing a personal IT device

If you are considering upgrading or buying a new IT device to use whilst studying at UCS, we recommend the following as a minimum specification.

These guidelines are provided to aid your decision making when purchasing new equipment. If you already own a personal device that does not meet these minimum requirements, it may not be necessary to replace it as there may be alternative ways to access the software and learning resources that you will use during your studies.

  • Operating System: Windows 8.1 or Windows 10
  • RAM*: 64-bit systems: 4 GB of memory or more recommended
  • Processor: Intel® Pentium® 4 or AMD Athlon™ Dual Core, with SSE2 technology
  • Hard Disk Space: 2 GB (minimum) free space available
  • Screen Resolution: 1024 x 768 or higher
  • Connectivity: An internet connection is required for activation of trial and single-user licenses
  • Browser: A web browser is required for accessing subject specific software. Chrome or Chromium Edge is recommended.
  • Additional required software will be installed with the application: Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributables for Visual Studio 2019.

Financial Support

Loans

For Access Courses, if you are aged 19 or over, you can cover the cost of tuition fees with an Advanced Learner Loan. Loan eligibility doesn’t depend on your income and there are no credit checks. If you complete an Access to HE Diploma and then go on to complete a degree, your Advanced Learner Loan will be written off.

All undergraduate students are required to pay an annual tuition fee. However, if you are a UK undergraduate you are eligible for a student tuition fee loan to cover the cost of fees. The Government pays the tuition fee directly to UCS, so no money passes through your bank account.

You do not have to pay back the loan and interest until you’re earning. If you leave your course early you would need to repay a percentage of the tuition fee loan for that year.

There is also a maintenance loan available to any full-time student to help with living costs such as rent. This does have to be repaid, but not until your course has finished. Read more here

Postgraduate Loans for Master’s Degrees

If you start a full-time or part-time master’s course after 1 August 2023, you can apply for a Postgraduate Loan. You’ll be able to borrow up to £12,167 to pay your fees and help with living costs. Find out more here

Scholarships and Bursaries

University Centre Sparsholt (UCS) will award bursaries of £4,500 to up to four new students each academic year.

There is flexibility in how these bursaries can be used, but they are intended to help with the cost of studying in order to make university more affordable.

The recipients of the bursaries will continue to receive the same amount for each year of their studies, as long as expectations for attendance and engagement are met.

The bursaries are a part of the University Centre’s  Access and Participation Plan , and therefore priority will be given to students whose backgrounds are traditionally underrepresented among the UCS student body.

Further details regarding how to apply will be supplied to all offer holders who have accepted an offer to study with us when they complete their ‘Next Steps’ registration form in the Summer term.

Enhanced Learning Credits

If you start a full-time or part-time master’s course after 1 August 2023, you can apply for a Postgraduate Loan. You’ll be able to borrow up to £12,167 to pay your fees and help with living costs. Find out more here

Access and Participation Plan

The UCS Access and Participation Plan sets out the actions that Sparsholt will take to ensure that learners from all backgrounds are able to access higher education, be successful whilst studying, and progress onto a meaningful career once they have graduated.

The purpose of the Plan is to ensure equality of opportunity, so that any learner who wants to study at higher education level, and has the aptitude to do so, is supported regardless of who they are and what their life journey has been.

The Plan is a requirement of the Office for Students, but it is something that UCS embrace and are proud to offer.
